What is Lip Blushing?
Lip blushing is a permanent makeup technique done with a tattoo machine that enhances the natural color of the lips while also helping to redefine the vermillion border. The Lip blushing technique can also create a lipstick look if you choose a more dramatic effect. The color is customized to each client. You will choose the color and technique to achieve your desired look.

Will it add volume or make my lips look bigger?
No! Lip blushing does not add volume to the lips. It gives a more defined appearance without fillers, restores color to pale lips, camouflages scars and hypo-pigmentation, and may eliminate the daily need for liner and lipstick to fill in or reshape the lip borders. We do not go beyond the natural border of the lips unless we are performing a scar camouflage.
Does it hurt?
Lips are very sensitive and everyone has a different comfort level. We will continue to numb you throughout the procedure to keep you as comfortable as possible. Even with numbing, some clients may still experience some discomfort. If the procedure is done during your cycle you will feel slightly more discomfort.
How long does the procedure take?
There are several stages. A topical numbing will be applied during the first 20 minutes as we discuss color. Then we will create an outline shape that you will approve prior to the start of the procedure. The full process takes roughly 2-3 hours.
How long do the results last?
Approximately 2-3 years. Everyone heals differently and at different rates and skin type and lifestyle can affect the longevity of your tattoo.
Will I need a touch-up?
Depending on your desired look, a single treatment may be sufficient. With most procedures, the color looks dramatically lighter after the first week. While some clients prefer this, others prefer a bolder look. The best results generally come from a two-step process. A perfecting session allows us to analyze how the color regenerates beneath the skin and add more saturation in areas that may have healed incorrectly. If your lips didn’t heal properly in the first session, we can make adjustments in the second appointment. Healed results are unique to each client and we do our best to create a consistent outcome. A perfecting session is beneficial for layering the pigment for more saturation. If you so choose, the perfecting session is offered for $150. At the second session, we will assess the color retention and make adjustments as necessary. The second session must be completed within 8 weeks from the original session for the reduced price-point to be honored.
Can lip blushing be done on anyone?
Lip blushing is NOT for everyone. There are various contraindications that will determine if you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure. If you have any of the following, lip blush will most likely not be the solution for you:
- Pregnant or Breastfeeding
- Undergoing chemotherapy
- You are a smoker (pigment may not retain properly, colors may distort)
- History of MRSA
- Overly sensitive skin
- Allergies to topical anesthetics
- Severe Acne around lips
- Dark skin and uneven skin tones
- Excessive scarring
- Untreated Herpes/Cold sores
- Lip filler within the last 4 weeks
- Keratosis
- Keloid scarring
- Facial psoriasis or eczema
- Iron deficiency
- Previous tattoo that has not faded
- Diabetes type 1 or 2 (due to slow healing and infection, color may or may not retain well)
- If you are under a doctor’s care and have questions at ALL about being able to have this procedure, it is your responsibility to meet with your doctor and get written approval.
** Please note…. even if none of the above apply, lip blushing cannot be guaranteed. This is a cosmetic tattooing procedure, the skin can be unpredictable, it is up to your skin to retain the pigment. Generally, results are successful, however, due to skin type, healing or bleeding during procedure, some results can vary.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
Pre-care for lips!
- Begin your Anti-Viral medication 3 days prior to procedure.
- Do not work out 48 hours before procedure.
- NO alcohol, caffeine or stimulants 48 hours before procedure.
- Avoid sun and tanning one week prior to procedure.
- Avoid Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E, Aleve, or Advil/Ibuprofen 48 hours before procedure.
- Avoid Fish Oil, Primrose Oil, Prenatal Vitamins, Nutritional Shakes (Shakeology, etc), “Hair, Skin, Nail” supplements for a minimum of 48 hours prior to procedure.
- Discontinue Retin-A, and Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) at least 1 week prior
- Must wait a minimum 4 weeks after lip fillers and 1 month after touch-up if you decide to get one. It is possible to have poor color retention in lips that have had injections before-hand.
- Wait six months after lip implant and get written clearance from your surgeon
How long does it take to heal?
It takes approximately 14 days for the lips to heal, and 6-8 weeks to fully appreciate the color. No down time is required after the procedure!
What should I expect immediately after my procedure?
Immediately following the procedure, lips may feel dry, chapped, tight and tender to the touch. The color will be 30-40% more vibrant but will continue to lighten over the next week. You should expect some swelling and possible bruising in the lips for the first few days. Everyone is different and some swell and/or bruise more than others. Arnica and Bromelain can both be purchased over the counter and taken starting 1 week before your procedure to help with this. Expect them to start peeling excessively but DO NOT PICK. This will go away within 5-7 days.
*Make sure to consult with your doctor before starting any new medications and please view the detailed aftercare instructions you are given.
What is the post-care?
- Complete your antiviral medication to prevent an outbreak.
- Apply ointment on lips several times a day. This should be done for at least 10 days post treatment. Do not allow lips to become dry. This may interfere with healed color. During the day if lips feel dry, apply a light layer of ointment. Make sure to dab/press onto skin, do not rub it in.
- Itching is normal, DO NOT PICK!
- No soaps, cleansing creams, or chemicals on lips. Wash your face carefully avoiding the lip area for 10 days. Splash clean your lips.
- Drink everything through a straw until lips completely peel.
- DO NOT stretch the lips. This will cause peeling and could lead to uneven lip color.
- Do not bite into greasy, oily, salty or spicy foods, rather cut them up and place them into your mouth.
- While eating, do not constantly wipe your lips with a napkin or keep licking your lips as this will impede the healing process. DO NOT PICK dry healing tissue or you WILL remove the pigment color!
- Avoid water on the new pigmented areas as much as possible, the first 7 days. (when showering, washing face, etc. have ointment on the pigmented area to protect lips from water).
- Do not stand in front of shower head when showering.
- Avoid underwater swimming for a minimum of 4 weeks to avoid bacterial infection.
- Before brushing your teeth, seal lips with ointment first. No whitening toothpaste (during the healing process). Do not bleach/whiten your teeth while your lips are healing (about 2 weeks).
- You may apply an ice pack (which must be protected with a wet barrier film of paper toweling, towel or cloth) for 10-minute intervals for the first 48 hours. Ice may be applied every hour or so, if desired. Do not put ice directly on area.
- Do not expose the lips to direct sunlight or tanning beds for 4 weeks. This is new skin and will sunburn easily and direct sun prematurely may also cause scarring and alter pigment color.
- You may wear lipstick, lip-gloss, and chapstick after 10 days. Make sure the tube of lip product is new.
- Sleeping slightly elevated will help prevent swelling. It’s recommended to sleep on your back on a satin pillow case. If the pillowcase is not satin, you may also wrap your pillowcase at night and replace with a fresh wrap in the morning. This keeps pigment from sticking to the pillowcase at night.
- No smoking while lips are healing (10 days minimum).
- No kissing, rubbing or friction on your newly tattooed lips until after 10 days or you may lose pigment.
- Lips may be dry for 3 to 6 months depending on the body reaction.
Will my lips be 100% perfect?
No. And to expect perfect lips is unrealistic. All tattooing, cosmetic or otherwise, is a form of art. Do your research. Choose an artist whose stylistic approach you are comfortable with to help ensure you will be satisfied with your results.
